Cat Ringworm: an Owner's Guide to Ringworm in Cats

cat-information: Different Kinds Of CatsRingworm in cats is caused by various fungal organisms. Since cats less than a year old don't have fully-developed immune systems, they are affected most often. Cats with longer hair also have more problems with ringworm. The condition is also very infectious as it can be transmitted to other cats, dogs, and even you.

Forms

As I mentioned earlier, cat ringworm is caused by various fungi. They include Microsporum Canis, Microsporum Gypsum, and Trichophyton. Most cats are affected by Microsporum Canis. So, what are some of the symptoms you should look for?

Symptoms

This fungus dwells in your cat's hair follicles. This weakens the shafts which causes hair to fall out. As the condition progresses, the hair loss will develop into circular patches usually on the head and limbs. Your cat may also have dry, flaky skin that's very itchy.

Diagnosis

There are multiple methods your veterinarian can diagnose this disease. The easiest way is to use an ultraviolet lamp. When exposed to this lamp, any fungus will glow a fluorescent green. Another way to diagnose ringworm in cats is to remove a few strands of hair and ship them off to the lab. The sample will sit for a while to see if any fungus grows.

Treatment

If left untreated, your cat will likely get rid of the condition himself in two to four months. However, as I mentioned, the disease is very contagious and can transmitted to you and other animals. So, it's best to get it treated quickly.

One of the main methods used to treat cat ringworm is shampoo with lime sulfur. The condition can also be treated with anti-fungal medications. If your cat has long hair, you should clip it so the treatment regimen is more effective. If you have more than one cat, you should take preventative measures and treat them also.

Besides ringworm, there are many other conditions that can affect your cat like feline constipation. You should be knowledgeable about these various conditions so you can get your cat treated quickly if he's affected. Luckily, cat-illnesses.com provides just what you need. So, stop by today to learn about a wide range of cat illnesses.

My kitty keeps throwing up, what can I do to help him?
My cat is about 2 years old (Turned 2 in May). I have never been very consistant with his cat food. I stick to the same three brands however. Meow-Mix indoor cat formula, Good Life cat food, and Whiskas. My cat was eating Meow-Mix. I ran out of Meow-Mix and I gave him Good Life (I buy several different kinds of cat food at a time. He seems to get bored of his food after a while) After giving him the Good Life, I noticed that he had thrown up! He threw up twice in about 2 days (those two times there were solid whole pieces of food that he threw up). A third time he threw up completely yellow liquid!! He went about 4 days without throwing up - and then last night he threw up again (I think it may have been a hairball..). My vet can not see him until Monday. In the mean time, what could this be? What should I do to help him? I am 20 years old and live with my parents. I have my own little "Studio appartment" set up in the finished basement. My cat lives down here with me (its a very large space..4 full sized windows for him to look out, etc...). We have 5 cats total. We found some kitty throw up around the house a few weeks ago - Solid pieces of cat food in the throw up.. The cats DO socilize together - usually the other cats come downstairs with me and my kitty (my kitty does not like to go upstairs so much)... Should I keep them seperated until this is figured out? Could this be a 'kitty bug' going around my house? the cats all go for regular vet visits & have all their shots... Also - a friend mentioned giving him grass?
