Facts About The Chausie Cat Breed
Are you thinking about getting a Chausie cat? Otherwise known as a Jungle Curl, Stone Cougar, or Mountain Cougar, the Chausie cat is a hybrid of domestic cats and wild Jungle Cats. The Chausie combines the genial nature of a domestic cat with the beauty and elegance of a jungle cat. Before you decide to take one of these kittens home, you should know a few things about them.
History of the Chausie Cat
The Chausie was created by cross-breeding Jungle Cats with domestic cats (Abyssinians and domestic shorthairs). The breed's name comes from the scientific name for the Jungle Cat, which is Felis chaus. The Jungle Cat was found in ancient Egypt and was given sacred status during the time of the Pharaohs, possibly for their role in helping keep rats from infesting the grain supplies. Egyptian royalty trained some other Jungle Cats to hunt wild water fowl. Finally, some were entombed with the Pharaohs to provide companions in the afterlife.
Appearance of the Chausie Cat
The Chausie has a tall, long-bodied look that comes from its Jungle Cat ancestor and the lean physique of an athlete. Its hind legs are slightly longer than its forelegs. The Chausie may be as tall as eighteen inches from paw pads to shoulders, with small feet in relation to the cat's overall size. The medium, wedge-shaped head has a long, square muzzle and a strong chin. This muscular cat has large, tufted ears and a naturally short tail reaching its hock.
Chausies are large cats weighing from sixteen to thirty pounds and they can sometimes reach sixteen inches at the shoulder. Females are typically one-third smaller than males. They have the look of a jungle cat with the domestic temperament of a domestic house cat. The Chausie's short coat resembles that of a Jungle Cat with the soft, dense undercoat. They can be a solid black, a black grizzled tabby, or a brown ticked tabby.

The demand lots of attention, and the Chausie is highly affectionate, active and intelligent. They can be very entertaining, but their energy levels are exhausting. Chausies manage fine with other cats and dogs, but they don't work well for families with young children. Also, hide the breakables away and keep your eye on your Chausie; they like to get into mischief.
