Canine Health: Dog Lifespans, Which Breeds Live Longest - And Why

The Life Expectancy Of The Dog

cat-information: Types Of Cat BreedsSome dog breeds live longer than others. This knol looks at the average life expectancy of popular breeds - and the reasons why some strains of canine die young.

The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog called Bluey. He was put to sleep at the age of 29 years and 5 months. [1]

Most canines, however, live considerably shorter lives than this. Scientists are constantly learning more about the factors that dictate the average lifespan of different breeds.

Dogs that resemble wolves live longer, for instance. While there are exceptions to this rule, the shape of a dog's face is generally a strong indicator of its likely lifespan.

The sharper and more wolf-like it is the more likely it is to live a relatively long life. The flatter the face, the shorter the lifespan, on average.[3]

Which Breeds Live Longest

The most authoritative study of canine lifespans in the UK was published in 1999 by the Veterinary Record, the magazine of the British Veterinary Association. [2] The study revealed some surprising facts. For instance, mongrels tend to live longer than most pedigree dogs, only 8 per cent of dogs live beyond the age of 15 and 64 per cent die or are put to sleep because of illness. Cancer is responsible for 16 per cent of deaths, twice as much as heart disease. While some terrier breeds can live for an average of 13 or 14 years, breeds like the Irish wolfhound can live for less than half this time, often as little as six years. The study also compiled a list of the average lifespan of the most popular breeds:

family issue. basically i want your advice and opinion?
there is a certain type of cat breed i want for my birthday(i would even pay for some of it). Do you think that just because my dad's girlfriend doesn't like that cat breed he wont ge ME that kind. by the way do you think its cute. she thinks its ugly just because it has blue eyes and a little bit of a flat face. she also thinks that tabby cats and ones like that are what cats SHOULD look like. http://www.ragdoll.co.za/lickies_buffie_april08.htm the one thing is that they are planning on getting married but have to get divorced with their spouces first. i kind of just feel like he cares more about what she thinks more than what i do because they would see eachother every day while i only spend time with them every wennesday and every other weekend.. he promised me we could get a dog when we got a new house but then couldnt because he works too much. i wish i could take it to my moms with me but we already have a cat and a dog that would kill it first chance he got. my dads girlfriend keeps saying i have a bad taste in cute. she also said " Hey, how often will you have to look at that snotty looking thing compared to us having to look at it every day." *****. i have a tabby cat so i dont want another one. i wanted a maine coon but she thought that one was big and ugly too. ive researched it and know that it doesnt shed as much which he would like. i tried sending her stuff on the way they act and stuff but she didnt even look its not the long hair she just hates the eyes and face. if anything my dad would hate the hair. he is allergic but said that as long as it isnt in one room (there bedroom, which means she wouldnt even have it in they're room) that i could get a long haired or short haired
