How do I know if my cat has an infection or asthma?
I adopted a cat a week ago. A few days after he got home he was coughing and weezing. We thought it was a hairball but nothing ever came up. I took him to the vet, who gave him a two-week shot of convenia. A few days later he was not getting any better, and based on the research my husband and I have done (including watching videos) it seems like he has feline asthma. I took him back to the vet, who said he doubted it was asthma, and that he thought it was an infection. He gave him a liquid antibiotic Clavamox. Now my husband is upset with me because he thinks I wasted money, that the Clavamox will not help if the Convenia didn't. He is determined it's asthma. My questions are (1) Are Convenia and Clavamox basically the same thing? Will the Clavamox work if the Convenia didn't? (2) Are the symptoms of an infection similar to what a cat sounds like when having an asthma attack? I tried calling the vet back, he is not being very helpful at all. There aren't many vets around here because I live in a small town. Also, he's not having any other symptoms other than a little bit of sneezing. But no runny nose or watery eyes. He's also eating, drinking, and playing just fine.
