How To Take Care Of A Young Kitten
You may one day come across an abandoned kitten. The kitten was probably abandoned by the mother which is something that is common in animals. A cat might even be in poor health and leave a whole litter behind. You may get stuck with raising them yourself. Newborn kittens need a lot of TLC as with any newborn animal.
When a kitten is born they weight just about 3 ounces. They should increase weight day by day. Make sure you keep track in a journal with each weigh in just to make sure they are growing and gaining weight healthily. All your kittens may look a like so try setting them apart with ribbons around their neck tied somewhat like a loose collar or mark their toe nails different colors to help differentiate the kittens. It is normal for cats to meow when they are eating but excessive crying and whining is not healthy. Make sure you call a vet to make sure your kittens are in good health. If you are feeding kittens either because your cat didn't produce enough milk or she abandoned them you have to know how much formula to feed it. Bottle feeding is an easy way to feed them. Again you want to call your vet and ask how much to feed your kitten based on its weight.
A kitten can learn how to use the litter box when it's about 3-4 weeks old. At that time they will start to leave the nest and start to wander off a little. Once they are using the litter box then you can try to introduce mixed foods which are some kitten wet food. Once you are feeding them 3-4 times daily then they will crawl in and out of the litter box that was placed near by. They will learn what it is for immediately. Most kittens learn how to use it by 5 weeks old. Litter boxes for kittens should only be filled with plain clay litter.
A kitten can not defecate or urinate on it's own until about 2 weeks. The mother usually cleans after the kittens. If she's not around to do it then you may have to do it yourself. Grab a moist cloth and gently rub the genital area free of any fecal residue. It also stimulates them to alleviate themselves. This should be done every 2 hours. If you're doing it all yourself without a mother cat then you are probably up to feeding them every 2 hours anyway so it's good to just clean them around that time. You'll also need to change blankets at least twice a day. Don't bathe your kittens. You can get them sick. Just wipe them with a moist cloth instead. Before you know it they will be ready for new homes.
