How to Be a Surrogate Cat Mother: The Symptoms of Poor Kitten Health

kitten-information: Kitten Has DiarrheaKitten health is particularly fragile during the early weeks of their lives. Many of the symptoms are subtle and easy to overlook, but their immune systems are delicate and a minor illness can easily grow into something much worse. In order to ensure that that does not happen and the health of your newborn kittens is protected, there are a number of symptoms that accompany various common kitten diseases that you will need to watch out for. This article outlines some of the most important.

Roundworms
It is very easy for newborn kittens to become infected with roundworms. Roundworms are spread by ingesting the eggs, which could be shed from another cat, passed on through the mother's milk, or even in the litter box. Diarrhea is one of the primary symptoms of roundworms. Vomiting, and having a pot belly are also very common symptoms, as is a poor coat.

Fleas
Fleas are one of the most common ailments to cats of all ages. They can be difficult to diagnose because cats will eat them as they groom themselves. While normally not much more than an annoyance in older animals, they pose a particularly serious problem for young kittens because they have so little blood, and a severe flea infection can quickly cause anemia, or worse.

Fading Kitten Syndrome
Fading kitten syndrome is a generic term for a wide variety of ailments. These kittens simply do not get well on their own. The primary symptoms include: diarrhea, dehydration, and severe lethargy. Dehydration is particularly serious in kittens, and immediate medical attention is necessary.

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is another common disease that affects cats of all ages, and refers to an eye infection. If left untreated for a prolonged period of time, conjunctivitis can eventually lead to total blindness. An infected eye is difficult for the cat to keep open, and frequently weeps fluid. There is also usually a yellow or green discharge coming from the eye. This infection is particularly contagious, so you will want to isolate any kitten that develops one.

While these are some of the most common ailments that newborn kittens fall victim to, there are far more that were not covered. A good rule of thumb is that if the kitten won't eat, develops diarrhea, has any type of fluid discharge or odd smell, or goes through any sudden change, it is best to take it to the vet immediately. This is especially vital during the first few weeks of life, when a kitten's health is particularly fragile.

My 5 month old kitten has diarrhea always after eating 'wet' food.?
When we got it it was 3.5 months old. Person says she was eating Wiskas Junior, wet food for kittens. But here, everything we give that food to her, she has diarrhea and bad one too. No blood or anything but sometimes its all fur near its legs is covered it it and once, it took it all over carpets. It is disgusting. We took it to the wet, who gave some medical dry food and told us to give it to here, only about 30gr for next 5-6 days.We did. And then we went to vet again. She told us to feed cat only with dry food. I asked 'for how long?' and she said 'ALL ITS LIFE.' How big of a idiot is she??? To feed cat dry food for its WHOLE LIFE???? Imagine how long people would live if we eat only biscuits and chips our whole life. So, how exactly i should feed it (if its possible not to die after 1 year?) My cat is indoor one, mix between domestic and Russian cat. Ok Candy, so doctor are always right? Even my one that stopped me from taking antibiotics so i spent 2 weeks in hospital? Well, it must my mistake, he is doctor after all. Even if i was born yesterday i would know (by logic) that every human being NEEDS more then 1 kind of food. It is sad seeing suck a shallow people, it really is. @ Danielle 1.) Cats are only suppose to eat dry food. Really? Thats why all my friends with cats and millions of people worldwide are feeding their cat with dry and wet food? This answers are amusing people, keep 'em coming! @ Jynx Finally, someone with some sense! I hears that 'Wiskas' food (wet but especially dry) is NOT good for the cats, something about too much salts that destroy cats kidneys . I gave it to her only 1 time when she came here, she was really hungry and didnt want anything else. Now, i am always buying most quality, premium royal, kitten food. My father is completely spineless, he thinks he needs to feed cat only dry food for next 10,11(or how long it will live- not much with only dry diet) years because vet said it and her word is like gods word..He is always throwing away wet food that i get. So what i am supposed to do? As long as cat is around my parents it will be fed ONLY dry food and i am sure, get sick and die soon
